SHOW DESCRIPTION

The work of sculptor Charles Bergen is a unique intersection of skill and imagination.  With works ranging from sublime animal sculptures to grand public installations, his artistry, architectural savvy and eye for uncommon forms in unconventional spaces render an engaging blend of precision and elegance that is both accessible and timeless.   Master Craftsman: Artful Stories in the City, highlights elements of design, engineering, collaboration through Bergen’s vision.   The show runs June 20 - August 13, 2016 at the Capitol Hill Arts Workshop.

INSTALLATION

Master Craftsman: Artful Stories in the City will feature original sculpture, replications of public works,  source materials, architectural renderings, photos, context panels, and interactive opportunities demonstrating creative and pragmatic processes involved from conception to finished piece.  Installation will bring “the outside into the gallery” with strategically placed sculpture and replications of public art scaled and modified to fit the constraints of the CHAW gallery.   It will tell the story of artistic evolution and displays that tell the story of what it takes to get a piece of sculpture into the public sphere.   Interactive materials may include an oversized coloring dragon, dragon walking path, a turtle sprinkler, medallions along the CHAW fence.  Display ideas include banner dragons that wrap around posts or transition from floor to wall, creation of “habitats” for sculptural animals, photos of fabrication.  The atmosphere will have a museum of science and industry quality to it, leveraging the 3D and public art nature of the work.

Support Brookland's Southern Gateway

I have created this sculpture of two monumental scarlet oak leaves and acorns to mark the Southern Gateway to Brookland's 12th Street Commercial Corridor. The sculpture is to be placed at the intersection of 12th and Rhode Island Avenue NE in Washington. See the rendering of the sculpture attached. I please need additional funding to complete this sculpture and am starting this crowdfunding campaign to reach my funding goal. .Please click on the link to see more images of the sculpture and to fund this project. Thank you in advance for your support

Take a moment to check it out on Indiegogo and also share it with your friends. All the tools are there. Get perks, make a contribution, or simply follow updates. If enough of us get behind it, we can make 'Scarlet Oak Leaves for Brookland, Washington, DC' happen!

Barracks Row and Eastern Market Letters for the Eastern Market Metro Plaza

Charles Bergen Studios teamed with Barracks Row to create designs for Barracks Row and Eastern Market Letters for the Eastern Market Metro Plaza.

Barracks Row is the oldest commercial street in Washington, DC. The word sculptures that spell out Barracks Row and Eastern Market will provide a picture worthy opportunity like Robert Indiana’s LOVE in Philadelphia. These sculptures will become a place maker, meeting place, and identifier of one of the oldest neighborhood in Washington, DC. The project is intended to harness the transformative power of public art to turn the idea of
signage into a tangible, interactive symbol of neighborhood identity and place-making.

MEDIA: GFRC with Tnemec Abrasive Resistant Coating

Public Art Proposals

Recently I did a series of Public Art Proposals for my Brookland, Edgewood neighborhoods and the Eastern Market and Barracks Row neighborhoods. Art on 8th will hopefully be getting some additional, custom pieces to enhance the community. And Eastern Market and Barracks Row will be getting some new, vibrant landmarks. A I have added them to my public art page here.

Chinatown DC Barnes Dance Artwork

The Charles Bergen Studios Team--Charles Bergen, Brandon Bailey and American Striping were just selected by the DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities to create the Chinatown DC Barnes Dance Artwork.

The Chinatown Barnes Dance Public Art Project is a new public art work designed to enhance the crosswalk at 7th and H Streets NW. This is a permanent two-dimensional artwork to be applied with paint to the high-visibility crosswalk.

Each year in Washington, DC’s Chinatown Chinese New Year is celebrated for fifteen days with a parade, the Dragon Dance, musical and dance performances, special food and numerous other cultural rituals and traditions. In this design for the crosswalk artwork the Dragon Dance used to celebrate and usher in the New Lunar Year gets top billing in the diagonal crosswalks of 7th and H St NW, Washington, DC. The long curves, colorful scales and expressive heads of the dragon lead the pedestrians from one corner across to the other. The twelve lunar zodiac symbols are placed in the gaps between the crosswalk bands. Here in the perpendicular crosswalks they forever reenact the race across the wild river that determined their sequence in the lunar calendar and allowed them to become zodiac signs for ever.
